The 2010 Canadian Snowcross Series came to an unexpected end when an all-time record heat wave combined with high winds and rain forced the cancellation of the Dayco National Championships at Horseshoe Resort. Playing host to the last event of the season in the early days of April, Horseshoe has come through year after year with more than enough snow to put together an incredible finale, this year they were left with their hands tied as a result of the unseasonable weather marking the first time the event has ever been cancelled.
At the first of four National rounds it looked as if it would be #202 Joey Sagan as the front runner for the championship. It was in Searchmont that Sagan took the win in the first Pro Open final of the year setting the bar high for the rest of his competitors. Unfortunately for Sagan, an injury sustained at the Owen Sound Regional event left him out for the rest of the season. National Round #2 took place in January in Lindsay, Ontario and it was Sagan’s team-mate, #73 Lee Butler, who put himself on top of the podium. Making up for a disappointing first round, Butler was flawless in all his motos and the final letting it be known that he isn’t willing to give up the #1 title he earned in 2009. #93 Iain Hayden also had an impressive weekend, taking second place in the final as well as a moto win. On to mthe Royal Distributing Cup in Barrie, Ontario where Butler proudly represented the Royal Distributing team with another big win ahead of Hayden. Butler would’ve had a clean sweep in the Pro Open class that weekend if it not had been for Hayden edging out Butler in the second moto of the day for the lead. The following weekend, racers moved onto the Hiawatha Entertainment Centre in Sarnia, Ontario for the ISOC/CSRA co-sanctioned event, Round #3 in the CSRA National Series. Both Butler and Hayden had moto wins going into the Pro Open Final and put on a great show for the fans with a heated battle lap after lap, in the end it was mHayden who came out on top with his first Pro Open win of the year. Hayden’s win at Sarnia put him in a tie with Butler for the overall championship, shining the spotlight on the final round at Horseshoe Resort in Craighurst, Ontario where the champion would be crowned. With the unfortunate cancellation of the event, it went down to a count of wins; Butler with two and Hayden with one. For the second year in a row #73 Lee Butler from Royal Distributing/Factory Recreation/Rockstar Energy has earned the title of CSRA Champion. Congratulations Lee! Butler also took the overall win in the Pro Stock class, making it a clean sweep for two consecutive years now. Runner-up in the Pro Stock class was #98 Mike Island who had a very impressive season aboard his Rosko Powersports Ski-Doo including a third overall in the Pro Open division. #115 David Joanis (Bourque/Polaris), rounded out the podium in the Pro Open class in third place. In Semi-Pro action, it was #87 Dustin Vandrie who grabbed the attention right from Round #1. Vandrie took the win at Searchmont followed by #511 Jaymie McPhail, with the remainder of the top five not far off. This set the stage for what everyone was sure would be an exciting season in Semi-Pro, being anyone’s guess who would come out on top at the end. At Round #2, in Lindsay, Ontario, Rockstar racer #421 Dylan Hall took his first Semi-Pro Final win after winning both of his motos. 2010 marked Hall’s first year in the Semi-Pro division after winning the Sport division in 2009, Hall was clearly pulling his own weight on the Royal Distributing/Factory Recreation team and determined to put his sled on the podium each weekend. #333 Jeremy VanDolder was also looking impressive in Lindsay with a second place finish in the final and podiums in both motos. Going into the third round, in Barrie, VanDolder was on a mission and was able to secure himself the win in the final ahead of a hard-charging Vandrie who had won both of his motos earlier on in the day. At the final round in Sarnia, Ontario; VanDolder went down hard during the Friday night ISOC races where he was running an impressive race holding his own near the front of the pack. Unfortunately for VanDolder, he found himself sitting out the remainder of the season while he waited for his injuries to heal. Vandrie had better luck than VanDolder in Sarnia winning each of his motos and the final, looking more comfortable than ever this year. At the end when all of the numbers were tallied, it was #87 Dustin Vandrie on his HMK/Arctic Cat taking the Semi-Pro Championship for the season, Congratulations Dustin! #421 Dylan Hall (Rockstar/Royal Distributing/Factory Recreation) finished an impressive second place overall in the Semi-Pro Open class, quite the accomplishment for his first year in the division. #217 Sean Macaulay of Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo took third place in the Open class and was able to grab the extra points needed to take the overall win in the Semi-Pro Stock class. Vandrie finished behind Macaulay in the Stock division by a handful of points with #219 Jamie Byers putting his Byers Equipment/Supertrax/Polaris on the final podium spot with a third place overall finish. In the Pro Women’s class, it was a three-way battle for the points lead at the start of the season beginning at Round #1 in Searchmont, Ontario. #55 Angela Vacchino took the spotlight immediately winning all three motos and taking the checkered flag in the final ahead of #111 Stacey Orr. #23 Wakenda Peters of Quebec rounded out the top three in third position. On to Round #2 in Lindsay where Vacchino once again took the win in the final but definitely had to earn it with a very persistent Orr keeping her on her toes the entire race. Peters took third in what would unfortunately be her last final of the season due to a knee injury. In Barrie for Round #3, both front runners battled back-and-forth each moto with Orr obviously having the advantage over Vacchino on the bigger obstacles. Orr couldn’t quite make it work for her though in the final, settling for second place behind Vacchino once again. For the final round of the season, the women headed to Sarnia ready to impress the fans. Orr was able to get out front and hold off Vacchino for the entire race grabbing a well deserved win. Unfortunately for Orr it would be too little too late with Vacchino in the overall lead by 15 points. For the third year in a row now, the season wrapped up with #55 Angela Vacchino winning the Pro Women Championship on her Team Shorline Arctic Cat, Congratulations Angela! #111 Stacey Orr of Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo took a respectable second place overall and a has a strong fan-following that is ready to see what she has up her sleeve for next year as she continues to put the pressure on Vacchino.
