Despite Mother Nature’s attempt to foil the Ryde FX Pro Snowcross, a snow-covered hill full of twists, jumps, and technical rhythm sections laid awaiting racers at Chicopee Ski Hill in Kitchener, Ontario. The partycrasher of the weekend was definitely the rain on Sunday afternoon, but it would take more than a rain-shower to ruin a great weekend of racing!
With the sun shining on the hill Saturday, it was #219 Jamie Byers who took the holeshot and held on for his first Semi-Pro win. Not far off Byers, was Rockstar racer #421 Dylan Hall in second place followed by #381 J.B. Dennis in third. The crowd was kept on their feet during the Pro Stock race as positions changed nearly every lap. #2 Steve Taylor took the lead from the start but that ended up being short lived as he went down before the end of the first lap. Taylor re-mounted quickly and looked determined to make up his lost time as he chased after the pack. #98 Mike Island took over the lead followed closely behind by #173 Corey Watkinson and #73 Lee Butler both looking to steal it away from him. With only a handful of laps left to go, Butler went down twice allowing for Island to walk away with the win. #14 Peter Raymer worked his way from mid-pack off the start to take second place and Butler regained his composure to finish third. Racers didn’t let a little bit of rain stop them from hitting the track hard Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of dedicated fans. In front of his hometown fans, #421 Dylan Hall took the lead in the Semi-Pro Stock class off the start. #219 Jamie Byers was fighting hard for second place but he ended up being overtaken in a corner by #217 Sean Macaulay who missed Saturday’s main event after a crash in practice. Hall began to pull away from the pack leaving behind a battle for the remaining podium positions. #107 Tom Adams came from fourth place to create stiff competition for Byers eventually passing Byers and Macaulay to finish second place. Byers narrowly beat out #440 Nick Bowman at the finish line for third place. All eyes were on the track for the final race of the day, the Pro Open Final. Right from the start racers were tight proving that nobody was going to be backing off throughout this race. #93 Iain Hayden and #2 Steve Taylor put on quite the show with a close battle for the first half of the race until Taylor started to pull away. #27 Andrew Sloot, who was in third place off the start was met by #73 Lee Butler in a corner who made his presence known leaving Sloot to scramble eventually ending up off the course on the uphill section. Butler was holding on to third position until the half-way mark when he left everyone guessing when he disappeared at the top of the hill. Butler re-appeared a couple of laps later – however it would be without his sled as he was left to walk down the hill back to the pit area due to a disabled sled. At the checkered flag it was #2 Steve Taylor grabbing the win ahead of #93 Iain Hayden. Coming from sixth position off the start, #98 Mike Island had worked his way through the pack to take third place at the checkered making himself the only racer to podium in both Pro finals over the weekend.
In the Pro Women’s class, it was #111s Stacey Orr of Coldwater, Ontario grabbing the holeshot. #55 Angela Vacchino of Timmins, Ontario made the pass on Orr halfway through the race and held onto the lead for the win leaving Orr to settle for second place. The final race of the season, The Dayco National Championship, takes place April 10th & 11th at Horseshoe Valley Resort in Craighurst, Ontario. The 2010 Pro Open title is still up in the air with #73 Lee Butler and #93 Iain Hayden tied in points going into the last round. Also expected, is our largest number of competitors in the Vintage division as they compete for the Lee Memorial Cup.
